Lynn Book je ameriška transmedijska umetnica, ki deluje v različnih disciplinah in kulturnih sferah in je v sodelovanju s festivalom pripravila avdio zapise za veliko zvočno instalacijo z naslovom Conductor, kjer njen glas postane prevodnik agonije ljudi, ki so se znašli v turbolenci aktualnih razmer po svetu.


Lynn Book is an American transmedia artist who works in various disciplines and cultural spheres. In collaboration with the festival, she has produced sound files for a large sound installation entitled Conductor, whereby her voice becomes a conductor for transmitting the agony of people who have found themselves in a turbulent state of the current global situation.

Lynn Book je transmedijska umetnica, ki deluje v različnih disciplinah in na kulturnih sferah s pomočjo odprtega telesa, besedila, glasu, materialnih praks in tehnologij za izvedbo performansov, razstav, medijev in tiskarskih del, posnetkov ter skupnih projektov. Na splošno se ukvarja s transformativnimi potenciali med ljudmi, prakso in prostorom, o katerih je seznanjena feministična in kulturna teorija, katere cilj je kritično preoblikovanje dojemanja in razvoj ustvarjalne agencije. Projekti Bookove se oblikujejo v mestnih središčih in galerijah, v klubih, na poljih, v spletu in v koncertnih dvoranah s številnimi sodelavci, vključno z arhitekti, skladatelji, celimi vasmi in operno zasedbo. Za svoje delo so ji med drugim podelili štipendije nacionalnega sklada za umetnost, newyorške fundacije za umetnost, sklada Franklin Furnace, sveta umetnosti Illinois, fundacije MacArthur, fundacije Mary Duke Biddle.

Ustvarjalna dela Bookove so zaživela v koncertnih in sodobnih umetniških prizoriščih in na festivalih v Berlinu, Neaplju, Budimpešti, Dunaju, New Yorku in Chicagu, pa tudi v Sloveniji in na Slovaškem. Njena video dela so bila prikazana v Veliki Britaniji, Hong Kongu, na Filipinih, v Sloveniji in Avstraliji, do njih pa lahko dostopate preko spleta na njeni spletni strani Vimeo ter preko številnih znanstvenih in umetniških revij, kot na primer ELSE (Transart), Synthesis (Atenska univerza), Anglistica (Univerza v Neaplju), nazadnje pa Abrigo Portatil (Brazilija). Njena uprizoritev dada skladbe Dada (Ursonate) (1922) Kurta Schwittersa iz leta 2013 je bila arhivirana na Penn Sound, skupaj z intervjuji in pogovori. Bookova je premierno predstavila nov koncertni projekt, “Plot”, z dolgoletno sodelavko Katharino Klement (Dunaj) in bila povabljena na festival “Sexing Sound” v Chicagu 2015, s predstavo “PLOT v.2” pa na mednarodnem festivalu “Artacts” festival jazza in improvizirane glasbe, St. Johann, Avstrija, 2017.

Lynn Book je poučevala v številnih izobraževalnih ustanovah in organizacijah, med drugim v Hong Kongu za izobraževanje leta 2015, Artstays, mednarodnem festivalu sodobne umetnosti na Ptuju v Sloveniji v obdobju 2010-11, Sarah Lawrence College v letih 2010-13, Kuhinjski poletni inštitut v New Yorku od leta 1999 do 2005, Studio eksperimentalnega zvoka v Chicagu 1994–2007 in poletne rezidencije pri Inštitutu Transart, 2004–16 v Berlinu in Avstriji. Njene preiskave telesa, domišljije, glasu in javne akcije vodijo te aktivnosti, ki lahko vključujejo besedilo, arhitekturo, zgodovino in prihodnost mesta. Book je leta 1999 v New Yorku ustanovila Voicelab, izobraževalno in kulturno organizacijo, s pomočjo katere je v izvirnih predstavah predstavljale mlade umetnike z inovativnimi pristopi k glasu. Do leta 2005 je tam poučevala in poučevala posameznike v zasebnih praksah in še naprej poučuje pedagogiko svojega ‘glasovnega telesa’ v različnih okoljih po vsem svetu.

Lynn Book predava interdisciplinarno ustvarjalnost dodiplomskim študentom na univerzi za svobodno umetnost na Univerzi Wake Forest v ZDA. Kot nekdanja direktorica tamkajšnjega programa za ustvarjalnost in inovacije je razvila inovativne tečaje, dogodke in simpozije, vključno z »Ustvarjalnost: svetovi v nastajanju«, »Ženske, podjetništvo, hrana in kraj« in IF (izumljanje prihodnosti), laboratorij festivala in objavila “Ustvarjalnost in podjetništvo: spreminjanje tokov v izobraževanju in javnem življenju”, ki izhaja iz njenega raziskovanja “kritične ustvarjalnosti”, ki ga vodi praksa. Svetuje študentom MFA in doktorskim študentom o ustvarjalnih praksah, kot glavni strokovni sodelavec Inštituta Transart v Berlinu in New Yorku, ki ga je formalno akreditirala Univerza v Plymouthu v Veliki Britaniji, leta 2020 pa univerza John Moores Liverpool v Veliki Britaniji. Book je tudi predavala na kolidžu Sarah Lawrence v New Yorku in na School of the Art Institute of Chicago, kjer je vodila vodilni program “4-dimenzionalnega oblikovanja” za umetnost, ki temelji na časovno baziranih delih, od leta 1985 do 1995.


Lynn Book is a transmedia artist working across disciplines and cultural spheres through extended body, text, voice, material practices and technologies to make performance, exhibition, media and print works, recordings, as well as collaborative projects.   She is overall concerned with the transformative potentials between people, practice and place, informed by feminist and cultural theory that aims to critically rework perception and develop creative agency.  Book’s projects take shape in city sites and galleries, in clubs, fields, online and in concert halls with a range of collaborators including architects, composers, a whole village and an opera company.  She has been awarded grants for her work from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, Franklin Furnace Fund, Illinois Arts Council, MacArthur Foundation, Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, among others.  

Book’s performance works have been experienced in concert and contemporary art spaces and festivals in Berlin, Naples, Budapest, Vienna, New York, and Chicago, as well as in Slovenia and Slovakia. Her video works have been screened in the UK, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Slovenia and Australia and are accessed online at her Vimeo site, and through several scholarly and art journals that include ELSE (Transart), Synthesis (University of Athens), Anglistica (University of Naples) and most recently, Abrigo Portatil (Brazil).  Her 2013 performance of the Dada piece de resistance, “Ursonate” (1922) by Kurt Schwitters, has been archived on Penn Sound, along with interviews and conversations.  Book premiered a new concert project, “Plot”, with long-time collaborator Katharina Klement (Vienna) by invitation for the “Sexing Sound” festival in Chicago, 2015 with “PLOT v.2” being performed at “Artacts”, an international festival of jazz and improvised music, St. Johann, Austria, 2017.

Lynn Book has been an artist in residence in a range of educational settings and organizations including, Hong Kong Institute for Education in 2015, Artstays, an international contemporary art festival in Ptuj, Slovenia in 2010-11, Sarah Lawrence College in 2010-13, The Kitchen Summer Institute in New York from1999-2005, the Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago 1994-2007, and summer residencies with Transart Institute, 2004-16 in Berlin and Austria. Her investigations into body, imagination, voice and public action guide these engagements that may by turns involve text, architecture, history and communal futuring of place.  Book founded Voicelab, an educational and cultural organization in New York in 1999 through which she produced emerging artists featuring innovative approaches to voice in original performances.  She also taught and coached individuals in private practice there until 2005 and continues to teach her ‘voicing body’ pedagogy in various settings around the world.

Book teaches interdisciplinary creativity to undergraduates in a liberal arts college at Wake Forest University in the US.  As former Director for the Program for Creativity and Innovation there, she developed innovative courses, events and symposia including “Creativity: Worlds in the Making”, “Women, Entrepreneurship, Food and Place”, and IF (inventing futures) Labs, a maker festival, and published “Creativity and Entrepreneurship: changing currents in education and public life”, derived from her practice-led research in ‘critical creativity’.  She advises MFA and PhD students in creative practices as a core faculty associate for Transart Institute in Berlin and New York, formally accredited by the University of Plymouth in the UK, and in 2020 by John Moores Liverpool University in the UK.  Book has also held teaching appointments at Sarah Lawrence College in New York and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she directed a leading edge “4-Dimensional Design” program for time-based arts from 1985- 95.
